More than 500 alumni returned to campus May 18-20 for this year's Black Alumni Reunion, which included a multitude of memorable moments.
An Inaugural Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Gala -- so named for the university's first male and female African-American graduates -- drew 232 people, including alumni, faculty, staff and students. Other events included a Greek Alumni/Student Step Show, a Pride Rally and a Town Hall Meeting with campus leaders.
At the latter event, Professor Emerita of African American Studies Francine Childs challenged each member of the crowd to contribute $203, one dollar for every year since the university’s founding, for the Urban Scholars program. The plea raised $2,677 on the spot, and additional contributions continue to stream in. Contributions can be made online or called in to 800-592-FUND and designated for the Urban Scholars program.
The Black Alumni Reunion is held every three years, with the next gathering planned for 2010.
