Distinguished Professor of History Alonzo Hamby appeared on the Public Broadcasting System’s popular “Lehrer NewsHour” Sept. 9 on the eve of Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s trip to the Middle East. Hamby was interviewed by host Jim Lehrer using a satellite uplink from WOUB-TV studios for a segment about the relationship between presidents and their secretaries of state.

Author of the award-winning Man of the People: A Life of Harry S. Truman published in 1996, Hamby compared President Clinton and Albright with Truman and his secretary of state, Dean Acheson. Hamby described the Middle East as a “quagmire” and predicted Albright would have little impact on the Palestine-Israeli conflict, a prediction that proved to be true.
