Students earn top awards
Competing with students from Harvard, Stanford and Yale universities, three Ohio University students have earned prestigious fellowships and scholarships. The students worked with the Universityıs Office of Nationally Competitive Awards, which assists students in competing for high honors.

Margaux Cowden, an Honors Tutorial College English major who graduated in the spring, is studying at the University of California at Irvine thanks to The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies. She was one of 85 students nationally to earn the fellowship.

Junior Nancy Judd, a biology and biochemistry major, earned the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. She was one of 300 undergraduate students nationwide to receive the award. Junior Dan Wik, who is majoring in physics and astronomy, received a Goldwater Honorable Mention.

Venture gets boost
An effort begun last fall to commercialize Ohio University research and create start-up companies in southeastern Ohio has received a $1 million boost from the state's Technology Action Fund. The grant matches $1.25 million in funds allocated by the project's partners, Columbus-based Battelle, the University's Edison Biotechnology Institute and The Ohio University Foundation.

The venture, called the Southeastern Ohio Science and Technology Commercialization Initiative, was created to move faculty discoveries and technologies from the lab to the public in the form of new products for health care, agriculture and other applications.
