Fischer, who graduated from Ohio University in 1974 with a B.S. degree in general studies, has covered the northern Rockies for Defenders of Wildlife for the past 20 years. Based in Missoula, Mont., he is recognized as a national leader on endangered species issues and has been involved with recovery programs for wolves, grizzly bears and black-footed ferrets.
A regular commentator on Montana public radio, Fischer has written dozens of articles on natural resource management and is the author of the 1995 book, "Wolf Wars: The Remarkable Inside Story of the Restoration of Wolves to Yellowstone." As a leader in the successful reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park and central Idaho, he developed the Wolf Compensation Fund, an organization which uses private money to reimburse ranchers for verified livestock losses to wolves.
Fischer has won numerous awards, including the National Resources Council of America's Award of Achievement for Education in 1986; the National Environmental Awards Council Special Merit Award in 1990; and the Don Aldrich Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Award in 1993.
