ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University kicked off its United appeal fund-raising campaign with a breakfast meeting for 27 team captains on Friday morning (Sept. 19) in Baker Center.

The university's campaign goal this year is $68,000, and the goal for the county-wide campaign is $165,000, said Richard Polen, assistant to the vice president for university relations and campus United Appeal chair. Last year, Oho University raised $67,785 of a $70,000 goal, as 814 contributors averaged $83.37 a pledge. The Athens County general campaign raised $161,000 last year.

Ohio University has traditionally accounted for about one-third of the total amount raised for United Appeal in Athens County.

"This campaign is not only important to the community, but it's also important to the university to be a strong player in this effort," said Ohio University President Robert Glidden, one of several speakers at Friday's breakfast event. "This is the kind of campaign that appeals to people's sensibilities to help others."

University employees will receive United Appeal materials by Sept. 30. The majority of the campus fund raising will take place in October, although contributions are accepted through the end of the calendar year.

The Athens County United Appeal general drive will kick off at 11 a.m. Oct. 4 at the Nelsonville public square. Skip Logan is the new executive director of United Appeal for Athens County, and Jim and Ronalda Tompkins are chairs of the county-wide campaign.
