Ohio University President Robert Glidden has appointed Associate Professor of Human and Consumer Sciences Judith H. Matthews and Journalism Professor Patrick S. Washburn as Ohio University's faculty athletics represe ntatives to the NCAA and Mid-American Conference.
Faculty athletics representatives were created by the NCAA to provide faculty perspective, oversight and advice to the president in the administration of the university's intercollegiate athletics program.
"I am very pleased that these two senior faculty members will accept this important role," Glidden said, "and I look forward to working with them on matters concerning the NCAA, the Mid-American Conference and our intercollegiate a thletics program."
As faculty representatives, Matthews and Washburn also become members of the university's Intercollegiate Athletics Committee, which consists of seven faculty members, three students, one classified staff member, two contract administrators, and one community member.
Matthews has been a member of the Ohio University faculty since 1968.
Past service includes duties as Faculty Senate representative and as a member of its Professional Relations and Internati onal Travel committees. She has served on the Executive Committee for the College of Health and Human Services and as a member of the Ad Hoc College Committee for Faculty Evaluation and Tenure and Promotion. Matthews has also been a member of the University Planning and Advisory Council, which assists the president and provost with budget-planning. She also has chaired numerous school committees and served as advisor to student organizations. She has organized and accompanied students on field trips to Chicago, Ill., High Point N.C.; and Grand Rapids, Mich.
From 1985-87, she served as an administrative intern in the provost's office. Since 1989, she has been director of the School of Human and Consumer Sciences.
Washburn was a member of the university Intercollegiate Athletics Committee 1985-87 and its chair in 1987.
He has been a journalism faculty member since 1984, graduate coordinator of the Scripps School of Journalism since 1987, and its assistant director si nce 1989.
Aside from general reporting and editing experience, Washburn has an extensive sports background: He was a sports writer and sports desk copy editor at newspapers in Atlanta, Charlottesville, Va., Big Spring, Texas, and Bloomington, Ind.; the first full-time sports information director at the University of Louisville; assistant sports information director at Harvard University; radio station sports director at Baylor University; United Press International stringer at Indiana Univer sity basketball games; a graduate assistant in the sports information office of Indiana University; and captain of the swimming team at Baylor University.
Washburn was honored with the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award from Ohio University's Graduate Student Senate in 1990.
Washburn and Matthews replace Mary Keifer and Jesse Roberson, both members of the College of Business, who had served four years before resigning in July.
