ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio University Women's Club is renewing a call for newcomers to join the group as it launches a year full of events celebrating its 60th anniversary.
Though many elements of the club have changed over the years, the purpose of the group remains essentially the same: it's a welcoming committee for women new to the university community, and a social staple for long-term members.
The club will open its academic year of activities at a Fall Reception beginning at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at The Ridges Auditorium. Among the historic items to be on display will be an exhibit of dozens of newspaper clippings and the club's original gavel, made of wood from a McGuffey elm and presented by the university administration in 1959.
Other events this year include a performance by the Lark Quartet, a tour of the Kennedy Museum of American Art, and guest lectures by John Kotowski, Ohio University facilities planning director, and Ann Teske, coordinftor of the Highpointe Retirement Village project. An evening titled "Operatic Adventures" will feature international opera singer and Ohio University graduate Nell Foster Schaenen, and the spring schedule will include the club's annual Spring Fling with spouses and Spring Tea at the home of Ohio University President Robert Glidden and his wife, Rene Glidden.
The club includes sub-groups involved in activities ranging from tennis to international cooking to satisfy its 200-strong membership's varying interests. Each interest group meets on its own as well as part of the entire club.
Women's Club President Jeanne Sloan, with the help of other board members, has sent a newsletter to the 1,400 women eligible for the club. They include wives of full-time faculty, admini strators, and active, retired or deceased Board of Trustees members, and full-time women presidential contract faculty, administrators and active or retired women trustees. Dues are $10 annually.
