OHIO UNIVERSITY TO SPONSOR STATE-WIDE
CHEMISTRY CONTEST

9/6/96

ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University will sponsor the annual Ohio Chemistry Contest for high school seniors Oct. 19 on the Athens campus.

The contest offers a first prize of a four-year full tuition scholarship as well as six other scholarships, 14 cash prizes, and numerous chemistry textbook prizes. The scholarships can be used to study any major on the Athens campus of the university.

The contest is designed to encourage the study of science, said Jimmy Tong, director of the contest and a professor of chemistry at Ohio University.

Following the one-hour, multiple choice test, participants will have a free lunch on campus, take a tour of the chemistry department, and attend a program on Ohio University admission, academic programs, financial aid and scholarships. Winners will be announced that afternoon.

Participants must be in the top 10 percent of their class and be recommended by their chemistry teachers. Each accredited Ohio high school may send up to four students, although additional entries may be accepted.

To collect the scholarships, winners must attend the university at the Athens campus beginning in the 1997 Fall quarter. To apply for the contest, students must submit a completed application, an official high school transcript that includes grade point average and ACT and/or SAT scores, a letter of recommendation from a chemistry teacher, and a $7 registration fee. Deadline for applications is Oct. 10.

More information and applications are available by calling Jimmy Tong at (614) 593-1738 or the department of chemistry at (614) 593-1737.
