NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL ANNOUNCES NEW
CAMPUS SAFETY DIVISION CHAIRMAN

9/25/98

The National Safety Council is pleased to announce that Jimmy Matthews of Ohio University has been elected Chairman of the Campus Safety Division. By virtue of this position he will also serve on the Board of Delegates of the National Safety Council.

A longtime member in the Division, Mr. Matthews has held numerous positions of responsibility in the organization. Of particular note, on the Awards Committee he worked to standardize criteria, to introduce new categories of competition, and to improve awareness of the Award Program's benefits. Because members must first earn the Award of honor for their own school's complete safety program, serving on this specific group is a prestigious responsibility.

Mr. Matthews has been Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Ohio University since 1973. Since 1974, when he first submitted Ohio University's safety program to the scrutiny of the Campus Safety Division judges, it has earned the Award of Honor five times. (Four years must lapse between submissions.)

The Campus Safety Division is also known as CSHEMA--Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association--which aptly describes the role it plays as the professional association of safety officers who manage the diverse functions associated with environment, health and safety at colleges and universities. The Division's 840 members represent over 500 schools from the U.S. and Canada.

The Council's twelve divisions are comprised of safety professionals from all fields. Each helps the Council to achieve its goals: through writing and reviewing articles for publication, of developing new products or sharing methodologists at regularly-held conferences. Campus Safety Division is especially valued as a source of information of emerging issues.
