The following is a statement by Ohio University President Robert Glidden responding to a report issued at noon today by the Harvard School of Public Health. (The Harvard report is the result of its second survey of 116 colleges and universities nationwide. It summarizes that binge drinking on American campuses continues unabated.)
"Unfortunately, I cannot disagree with the findings of the survey by the Harvard School of Public Health regarding binge drinking on campuses. We don't fully understand the student drinking culture that is the scourge of nearly every campus in America, but certainly we in colleges and universities all need to make a strong, conscientious effort to counter it. We at Ohio University are engaging in a systematic campaign to raise the level of awareness among our students, and to convince them that our concern is not just a moralistic one but a sincere concern for their health and safety. We are appealing to their sense of responsibility, personal accountability, and respect, both for themselves and for others. I think our message is being well received, but we know that this will have to be a long and persistent campaign."
