ATHENS, Ohio -- Several faculty and staff appointments were announced by Ohio University as the 1998-99 academic year began Tuesday.
Josep Rota has been named associate provost for international programs as part of a reorganization of the Center for International Studies.
Rota will oversee 129 international agreements involving study abroad, internships, faculty exchanges and the Ohio Valley International Council, an outreach program for public schools and other organizations in Southeast Ohio. The center, which Rota will continue to direct, also administers the Fulbright Program and Peace Corps recruitment and houses the National Resource Center for African Studies.
Erek Perry has been named to the new position of assistant to the dean for minority recruitment and retention for the College of Arts and Sciences. Perry earned a master's of education degree, with a specialization in higher education administration, from Ohio University in 1995. He received a bachelor's degree in social sciences from Shawnee State University in 1992.
Perry has worked for the university since 1993 in Admissions and Residence Life, most recently as an assistant director of admissions, providing academic and career advising to prospective and enrolled students.
The new position, similar to those in other Ohio University colleges, was created in response to the university's continuing efforts to recruit and retain minority students, said Associate Dean Maureen Weissenrieder.
Associate Professor of Education Glenn Doston has been named associate dean of the College of Education, effective July 1.
Doston completed a bachelor's degree in secondary education and a master's degree in social science at Southern University. He completed a Ph.D. in social science education at Northwestern University before joining the faculty in 1980. As associate dean, Doston will oversee graduate and summer programs, tuition scholarships and technology. He will oversee communication with the Board of Regents and annual reporting to education accrediting agencies.
Associate Professor of Education Bonnie Beach has been named assistant dean of the College of Education, effective July 1.
Beach earned her Ph.D. in 1984 and master's degree in 1979 in mathematics education at Ohio University and her bachelor's degree in mathematics and science education from Ohio State University in 1970.
Beach will oversee the undergraduate programs of the College of Education and coordinate student services and teacher certification. She also will serve on the executive council and other committees.
Judith Matthews, associate professor and director of the School of Human and Consumer Sciences, has been appointed interim dean of the College of Health and Human Services, effective immediately. Matthews completed a bachelor's degree in home economics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a master's degree in interior design at the University of Tennessee and a Ph.D. at Ohio State University in home economics before coming to Ohio University in 1968. Margaret King, professor of human and consumer sciences, has been named interim director of the school. King joined Ohio University in 1980. Both appointments will end June 30, 1999.
Barbara Chapman, dean of the college since 1991, resigned in August to become vice president for academic affairs at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. A national search for a new dean will begin this fall.
