ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University had a 1 percent enrollment increase on its Athens campus fall quarter as 19,189 students enrolled, up from 18,997 students fall quarter 1996, according to Michael Williford, director of institutional research, who released the enrollment figures Friday.
The Athens campus enrollment includes 16,185 undergraduates, up from 16,075 fall 1996, 2,589 graduate students, up from 2,500 in 1996, and 415 medical students, a decrease from the 422 enrolled in 1996.
An additional 8,041 students enrolled at the five regional campuses, up from 7,945 students enrolled fall quarter 1996. All regional campuses except Eastern, which decreased enrollment 9.2 percent to 877 graduate and undergraduate students, had enrollment increases. Chillicothe increased 1 percent to 1,567, Southern enrolled 2,664 students, a 3.9 percent increase, Lancaster increased 2.5 percent to 1,711 and Zanesville increased 2.3 percent to 1,222.
An additional 375 students enrolled in graduate and undergraduate continuing education courses.
The Athens and regional campuses had a total enrollment of 27,605 students, a 0.8 percent increase over the 27,386 enrolled in fall quarter 1996.
Coincidentally, the Ohio Board of Regents released its Preliminary Headcount Report Friday, showing some 408,855 students enrolled at Ohio public universities fall quarter 1997. Due to a number of reasons, including the duplicated counting of students simultaneously enrolled at a main university campus and a branch campus, there are discrepancies between the preliminary numbers and the final count.
