ATHENS, Ohio -- California Senator Tom Hayden, an author and member of the famed Chicago Seven, will visit Ohio University's Athens campus Oct. 21-23 as part of the Kennedy Visitors Series and the Elizabeth Evans Baker Lecture Series.
During his visit, he will deliver two free, public lectures and take part in discussions in several university classes.
Hayden, a founder of "Students for A Democratic Society," currently is chair of the Committee on Natural Resources and Wildlife, as well as the Select Committee on Higher Education, in the California Senate. He has spoken out extensively about the corruption of money in American politics.
Hayden's first lecture will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21 at the First Presbyterian Church on Court and Washington streets. During the lecture, which is sponsored by the Kennedy Visitors Series, Hayden will discuss "The Lost Gospel of the Earth: Politics, Spirituality and the Environment."
His second talk, part of the Elizabeth Evans Baker Lecture Series, will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23 in 194 Irvine Auditorium, on the subject of "Legacies of the 1960s and the Politics of Reform Today."
In addition to his public talks, Hayden also will speak to several student classes, including a planned lecture with Ohio University graduate David Wilhelm, chairman of the Democratic National Party from 1993-93 and the 1992 national campaign chairman for the Clinton-Gore campaign.
Hayden is the author of three recently published books: "The Lost Gospel of the Earth: A Call for Renewing Nature, Spirit, and Politics;" "The American Future: New Visions Beyond Old Frontiers;" and "Irish Hunger: Personal Reflections on the Legacy of the Famine."
His visit is sponsored by the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, College of Communication, Contemporary History Institute, Institute for Applied and Professional Ethics, Department of History, the Kennedy Lecture Series and the Baker Peace Studies Program.
