ATHENS, Ohio -- The Classified Staff Advisory Council on Wednesday (Oct. 16) at Baker Center honored four Ohio University students, who received $1,000 scholarships for the 1996-97 academic year.
The inaugural scholarships kick off an annual scholarship program funded through an endowment based on CSAC's sale of woven coverlets depicting scenes of Ohio University.
More than $60,000 has been raised to endow the scholarships, according to Kathy Cooper, former chairman of CSAC when the fund-raising drive began in 1994.
The one-year scholarships and the recipients are:
Non-traditional: Marilyn Eitel, of Chillicothe, a senior psychology major on the Chillicothe campus with a 3.67 grade point average. Regional campus: Cheryl Smith, of Leesburg, a junior geology major on the Chillicothe campus with a 3.66 GPA. Academic: Jennifer Maurer, of Westerville, a sophomore business major on the Athens campus with a 3.94 GPA. Employee: Travis Campbell, of Glouster, a sophomore biological science/physical therapy major on the Athens campus with a 3.62 GPA. He is the son of Charles and Darlene Campbell, an account clerk specialist at Alden Library.
The CSAC committee established guidelines for the scholarships and the recipients are selected by university financial aid counselors. The scholarships are based on academic performance. The employee scholarship is awarded to a spouse or child of an OU employee. The non-traditional scholarship takes into account need. The regional campus scholarship will rotate between the five regional campuses each year.
"Their effort in selling the coverlets has been very important in recognizing their overall concern for the university and the importance of supporting a scholarship," said Gary North, vice president for administration. "The work they have done has improved moral. It really has been one of the most successful projects I've seen an employee group undertake, in terms of the money raised, and the good will created by their efforts."
The 50-by-67-inch coverlets feature historic campus buildings and artists' renderings of the five regional campuses, the Marching 110 and the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
The coverlets, priced at $50 each, are available at the regional campuses, Krogers in Athens and by calling Margaret Shields at 593-4112 or Kathy Cooper at 593-4334.
The 24-member council was created in 1989 as a forum for providing advice and making recommendations to University Human Resources and the campus administration on issues affecting classified employees. The council serves about 900 non-bargaining unit employees on all six campuses.
