ATHENS, Ohio -- Two programs produced by Ohio University Media Productions have won Aurora Awards recognizing excellence in the independent film and video industries.

The unit, part of the University Relations Division, earned gold statuettes for a documentary on The Lark Quartet and a program on The Dairy Barn Cultural Arts Center's Arts Education Initiative.

The Aurora Awards are presented annually in 140 categories. The programs produced by Ohio University Media Productions were among 1,000 entries judged in the awards contest.

"It's always gratifying to have team members of our University Relations Division win major national awards, especially when other Aurora Award winners for this year included such organizations as HBO, IBM, Time-Life, NASA, Polaroid and The Discovery Channel," said Vice President for University Relations Adrie Nab.

"The Lark Quartet: A Year in a Residency" took gold in the documentary-cultural category. The hourlong program, which aired earlier this year on WOUB-TV, follows the quartet through part of its three-year residency at Ohio University. Senior Producer David Urano wrote, produced, directed and co-edited the program. Associate Producer Vicky Foster was the principal videographer and co-edited the program, and 1998 graduate Andy Marconi designed the graphics. Director of Media Productions Paul Ladwig was executive director of the project.

A second gold statuette came in the non-profit/charity category for a program documenting The Dairy Barn's Arts Education Initiative pilot program. The video has been shown to schools and prospective donors to recruit participants and raise funds to continue the initiative. The program was written and produced by Urano and edited by Foster, who also designed the graphics.
