ATHENS, OHIO -- Ohio University President Robert Glidden has been named chairman of a national advisory group to oversee leadership development programs for the American Council on Education (ACE), the major umbrella higher education association with about 1,800 colleges and universities as members.

Glidden will serve a two-year term as chairman of the Commission on Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness, a group of about 50 college and university presidents from across the nation. The commission serves in an advisory role to the ACE's Center for Institutional and International Initiatives. He was appointed in September.

The center's goal is to strengthen the nation's colleges and universities by providing a forum for discussion of leadership and leadership development and by sponsoring programs that promote institutional improvement and change. The center also is active in helping institutions identify promising candidates for presidencies and senior administrative positions.

Programs in the center are:

*The Fellows Program, which prepares college and university leaders to become skilled in the management of change; the National Presidents Study, which researches the backgrounds and career paths of American college and university presidents; the Department Leadership Program, which offers three annual national workshops to help department chairs enhance their effectiveness as leaders; and the Project on Leadership and Institutional Transformation, which has a national laboratory involving 26 institutions undertaking comprehensive change.

The American Council on Education, founded in 1918, is a forum for the discussion of major issues related to higher education. It maintains both a domestic and international agenda, seeking to advance the interests and goals of higher and adult education in a changing environment by providing leadership and advocacy on important issues and offering services to its members. It is based in Washington, D.C.
