ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University and Ohio State University are pursuing an agreement on Ohio State's use of Ohio's registered trademark, Ohio University officials announced today (Tuesday).
Representatives of Ohio University and Ohio State University met Monday afternoon (11/24/97) at the Lancaster regional campus of Ohio University to discuss Ohio State's pending objection to Ohio University's registered trademark of "Ohio," which was granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 1995 for Ohio University's use on athletic team uniforms, apparel and entertainment services.
"Many issues were resolved in our meeting Monday," said Alan Geiger, assistant to the president at Ohio University. "It will take a couple of more weeks to work through language for the two institutions to reach a consent-to-use agreement that we can both live with. Both parties have reviewed and recognized their historic and planned uses of the term 'Ohio.' We are now working on the details of how that will be recognized, and by Dec. 15 we expect to have a formal agreement for our mutual benefit."
