On Sept. 24, Guatemala designated Ohio University as its North American depository for materials published in that country.

Ambassador Lamport's two-day visit to Ohio University is intended to show visible support for the recent agreement and to discuss cooperative projects -- including preserving and archiving the Central American Archives in Guatemala City. The archives date back to the early 18th century. Other aspects under discussion include student and faculty exchange, and research in areas ranging from music to tropical medicine.

"In a sense, being designated the official depository is only the beginning of what I think can be a very fruitful and productive relationship," said President Robert Glidden.
