ATHENS, Ohio -- Joseph Stiglitz, one of the world's premier economists, will engage Ohio University Distinguished Professor of Economics Richard Vedder in a wide-ranging "Athenian Dialogue," a debate on public policy and economic issues moderated by Ohio University President Robert Glidden at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10 in Studio A on the 5th floor of the Radio-Television Communications Building.
The debate will be broadcast on channel 59 of Catvision on the Athens campus. Seating for 60 observers is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Stiglitz will also discuss economics and be available for questions at a public forum from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday in 114 Copeland Hall.
Currently senior vice president and chief economist at the World Bank, Stiglitz is also the author of several textbooks on economics, according to Jan Palmer, chairman of the Economics Department, who helped arrange Stiglitz's visit. After receiving his doctorate in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1966, Stiglitz began his teaching career at MIT and later served as a professor at Yale, Oxford, Stanford and Princeton universities.
"Joe Stiglitz is one of the preeminent economists in the world today," said Vedder. "He's an expert on a wide range of economic issues and he's currently the top economist at the World Bank. He had the top job in economic policy when he was chairman of President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisors. He has the rare ability to communicate complex issues to a large number of people."
WOUB-TV will broadcast the debate Monday, Dec. 1 at 9 p.m.
