ATHENS, Ohio -- "State of the Fantastic: Horror Films, New Interactive Media and the Contemporary Imagination" is the theme of the 18th annual Ohio University School of Film Conference Nov. 6-8 on the Athens campus.
The conference will draw more than 40 national scholars, who will present papers on the "fantastic" theme, and will feature showings of film classics that are free and open to the public.
The opening film, "The Edge of the World" by Director Ignacio Ortiz, will be shown at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 in Seigfred Hall's Mitchell Auditorium with Ortiz making an appearance after the screening. The 1931 restored version of "Frankenstein" starring Boris Karloff will be shown at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7 in Mitchell Auditorium and "Naked Lunch" will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 in Scripps Hall's Cortland Anderson Auditorium.
"The issue of imagination is of critical importance in the coming century of technological prominence," said Jenny Lau, professor of film at Ohio University. "It is the responsibility of scholars, especially those in film and cultural studies, to investigate the cultural implication of the impact of rationality on the contemporary human mind."
