ATHENS, Ohio -- Guatemala's ambassador to the United States, Pedro Lamport, will be available for news media interviews 11-11:20 a.m. Friday Nov. 7 on the first floor of Alden Library, in the new Guatemala Depository section.

Ambassador Lamport will be visiting Ohio University in part to discuss strategies to protect and chronicle irreplaceable Central American archives.

Joining the ambassador will be Ohio University President Robert Glidden, Dean of Libraries Hwa-Wei Lee, Director of International Studies Josep Rota, Director of Latin American Studies Thomas Walker, and Athens resident Ann Harris, a longtime resident of Guatemala who helped make the link between Guatemala and Ohio University.

Because scheduling is tight, we ask that questions be directed initially to the ambassador, Glidden and Lee, who will leave at 11:20 a.m. for another engagement. If necessary, Lee and Ambassador Lamport will return between 11:45 a.m. and noon.

Guatemala recently designated Ohio University as its North American depository for materials published in that country. By terms of the accord signed September 24 by Glidden and Guatemala Minister of Culture and Sports Augusto Vela Mena, the materials will include "all government publications for public distribution, available archival materials, historical, archeological, scientific, contemporary artistic, scholarly/research publications, and publications providing general information on Guatemala, including business opportunities and economic investment in print or micro format as well as representative materials in other media such as musical and video cassettes and CD-ROMs."
