ATHENS, Ohio -- More than 1,800 people are expected to attend the annual Honors Convocation at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Grover Center Auditorium.

The convocation, which begins with an academic procession, is a highlight of Parents Weekend. The event recognizes scholarship recipients and donors as well as Distinguished Professors.

During the ceremony, two new Distinguished Professors will be announced. The award, established in 1959, recognizes scholarly accomplishment, professional reputation and contribution to the university. A lifetime designation, recipients can name one student annually to receive a Distinguished Professor Scholarship.

Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences Robert Hikida will be the featured speaker. Hikida has earned international acclaim for his studies on the development, maintenance and regeneration of muscles. His research also includes a NASA-sponsored study of training methods that might apply to space flight.

President Robert Glidden will welcome undergraduate scholarship recipients and their parents, scholarship donors, university faculty and staff. Senior Kimberley Rutter, a social work major in the Honors Tutorial College, also will address the convocation.

Some 4,120 Ohio University students received scholarships worth $7,989,638 for the 1998-99 year, according to Ann Brown, assistant dean of the Honors Tutorial College.

"The Honors Convocation provides an important opportunity to recognize student scholarship and academic excellence," Brown said. "Every student who receives an academic scholarship is invited to attend."
