ATHENS, Ohio -- Malaysian management professor Mohamed Sulaiman of the Universiti Sains Malaysia has been appointed the ninth Tun Abdul Razak chair in Southeast Asia Studies at Ohio University.
Sulaiman, who joined the university in the fall, is the ninth scholar to serve as chair since the position was created in 1980. He will serve a two-year term.
The Razak chair was named for the second prime minister of Malaysia, who helped to shape the country's education and economic policies. The position was created jointly by Ohio University and the Malaysian government to foster international ties.
Sulaiman teaches strategic management and leadership courses at Ohio University. His focus on Malaysia includes its society, history, politics and economy.
"The idea is to cultivate a sense of closeness between Malaysia and the United States," Sulaiman said. "We want to create an understanding of Malaysian culture, tradition and values within the American public."
During his term, Sulaiman will plan the seventh Tun Abdul Razak International Conference on the Athens campus in April 1999. The biannual conference will focus on advancing theory and practice of business and management in Southeast Asia.
Sulaiman teaching and research interests include strategic management and leadership.
