ATHENS, Ohio -- Three administrators were commended for distinguished service to Ohio University during a ceremony Thursday recognizing them as winners of 1997-98 Outstanding Administrator Awards.

This year's recipients are Margaret L. Sheskey, assistant vice president for administration, Office of Development; Edward Newman, recycling and waste manager; and Kim Wortman, manager of mail services. Each will receive $1,000 to be used in pursuit of professional interests. President Robert Glidden presented the awards at a ceremony at Baker Center.

The university's Administrative Senate sponsors the awards program, through which 43 people were nominated for recognition this year. Selection was made by a nine-member committee chaired by Stacia Stutzman, assistant director of counseling and auxiliary services in the Office of Financial Aid.

Administrative awards were given to 100 other staff members with 10 to 35 years of service to the university. Also, retirement awards went to Rachel Graham and Ruth Pratt, Nelson Dining Hall, 34 and 31 years, respectively; Jerry Reese, Admissions Office, 35 years; and James Stewart, interim dean of the College of Fine Arts, professor of comparative arts and associate professor of music, 30 years. The Administrative Service Awards Committee was chaired by Linda Stroh, assistant to the dean for special projects in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology.

Sheskey was praised for the devotion, talent and leadership skills she has displayed in her 15 years of service to the Office of Development. She has been in her current position since 1995, and previously served as researcher and then director of alumni records.

Sheskey has been active in a number of university activities, including serving on the Ohio University Credit Union Board of Directors, the Ohio University Capital Planning Advisory Committee and the Ohio University Human Resources Advisory Committee.

Newman, who has served as manager of recycling and waste for eight years, was honored for his achievements in reducing solid waste and implementing recycling programs on campus. Newman has negotiated cost-effective trash and recycling contracts for the university, keeping costs from rising while expanding materials recovery across campus.

He is involved with several local volunteer groups, including Southeastern Ohio Recycling Terminal (SORT), Rural Action, ReUse Industries and the Bike Path Advisory Committee.

Wortman has worked as the manager of mail services at Ohio University for eight years, and has developed and enhanced services in international mailing, automated bulk mail processing, postage discounts for first class mail, and express and parcel shipping programs. He was instrumental in establishing the U.S. Postal Service-operated Baker Center postal station.

Wortman is a charter member of the National Association of College and University Mail Managers. He also has raised funds for Vinton County schools' athletic boosters and foundation, and has been active in school levy campaigns. He has coached youth baseball and been an avid supporter of other youth athletic programs.
