ATHENS, Ohio -- Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Douglas Lawrence has been appointed to a one-year term as interim associate provost for information technology at Ohio University, effective July 1, according to Provost Sharon Stephens Brehm.

Lawrence will serve as the senior administrator for technology initiatives at the Athens campus and five regional campuses. He will oversee Computer Services, Communication Network Services and the new Center for Innovation in Technology for Learning.

"I very much appreciate Dr. Lawrence's willingness to take on this important assignment for the university," Brehm said. "He brings both technical expertise and a faculty perspective to this crucial position. I am confident that his leadership will enable us to make significant progress in meeting the many pressing needs for instructional, research and administrative technology."

Lawrence completed his bachelor's degree in computer engineering at Lehigh University, and master's and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

He is graduate chairman of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and specializes in systems and control theory. "I look forward to serving in this capacity during a time when many exciting technology initiatives are already underway and as Ohio University plots its strategies for the institution-wide use of technology in the next millennium," Lawrence said.

Tom Daniels, associate provost for space and planning, had served in the position for eight months while a national search was conducted to fill the position, but the appropriate candidate to fit the needs of the university at this time was not found, according to Brehm.

"Tom Daniels made an enormous contribution to the information technology area, while continuing to work on the many complex space issues that the university is confronted with," Brehm said. "We all have reason to be grateful to him for his dedicated service to the university."

During the fall, the university will begin another national search to fill the position on a long-term basis with a starting date of July, 1999, Brehm said.
