I have made it clear that I will continue to refrain from using e-mail to express a position on Issue 2 , but also admit that I cannot apply that rule to others because we do not have a policy about the matter. There is no question but that we expect all members of the university community to express their views on all manner of subjects and that we will not restrict the use of university e-mail. I made the mistake of trying to apply the same rules to e-mail that we would use for regular campus mail. We would not, for example, knowingly use campus mail to distribute commercial flyers or campaign literature, just as we have a policy against posting campaign signs on campus.
But it is quite apparent that those rules cannot be applied to e-mail. I wish I had thought this through earlier because it would surely have made it easier for me to convey my opinions about Issue 2.
