Ohio University President Robert Glidden and Ohio University faculty member Dr. James Shirey have reported that a disagreement over the use of the university e-mail system has been resolved to their mutual satisfaction. The disagreement arose over a difference of opinion regarding use of e-mail concerning their positions on a proposed increase in the state sales tax.
President Glidden said that Dr. Shirey will not be expected to pay for individual e-mails concerning his position on Issue 2, and in fact, there is no clear way to calculate such a cost. Glidden says that according to his interpretation of an April 16 Secretary of State ruling on use of university resources, he will still refrain from communicating his own position by e-mail.
Glidden and Shirey point out that regardless of how the vote on that issue turns out, adequate funding for both higher education and for K-12 is a critical problem for BOTH systems. They agree young people in Ohio wouldbe better served if both branches of public education worked together to solve both of their funding problems.
