ATHENS, Ohio -- All five floors of Seigfred Hall will be devoted to displays, arts demonstrations and entertainment during the Ohio University School of Art's first-ever free, public Open House from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday (May 29) on the Athens campus.
In the first of what is to become an annual gala event, the School of Art's 35 faculty members and nearly 450 undergraduate and graduate students will welcome the campus and community to view exhibits, visual arts activities and musical performances. At least 65 graduate students' studio displays will be open during the event.
"This Open House will give both the public and all of our students a chance to see the huge variety of creative work produced by student and faculty artists at this university," said Associate Professor of Art Carolyn C rdenas, an organizer of the Open House.
The fifth floor will house paintings, installations and slide presentations, an art history room and a showcase of upperclass scholarship recipients' work. Graphic design work will be displayed on the fourth floor along with a World Wide Web site viewing and a letterpress demonstration. The School of Visual Communication will exhibit work on the third floor. Printmaking and photography displays will be set up on the second floor and throughout the building. Demonstrations are scheduled in the darkroom and on the printing presses. On the first floor, participants will find sculpture and ceramic displays and wheel throwing, woodshop and foundry activities. The Art Education Department will hold a children's workshop all evening.
Local folk and Celtic musicians will perform during the event, and several local rock bands are scheduled to play in the amphitheater outside Seigfred Hall's second floor. Food and beverages will be provided on every floor of the building.
The location of activities and demonstration schedules will be posted throughout the building. Many students also will sell their work during the Open House.
