ATHENS, Ohio -- Three administrators will receive $1,000 awards for distinguished service to Ohio University when they are named winners of the 1996-97 Outstanding Administrator Award during a ceremony from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday (May19) in Baker Center Ballroom on the Athens ca mpus.
The recipients are Director of University Judiciaries Richard Carpinelli; Environmental Health Specialist David H. Smith; and Associate Dean of Students and Director of Student Life Programs Michael Sostarich.
The recipients will receive their awards from President Robert Glidden and may use the money in pursuit of professional interests. The university's Administrative Senate sponsors the awards program. Fifty-four people were nominated for the awards. The selection was made by a nine-member committee chaired by Stacia Stutzman, assistant director of counseling and auxiliary services in the Office of Financial Aid.
Administrative awards will be given to 105 other staff members with a range of 10 to 35 years of service to the university, according to Valaria McCabe, director of advancement in the College of Education and chair of the Administrative Service Awards Committee.
Carpinelli is praised for more than 10 years of administering the Student Code o f Conduct in a fair and consistent manner with diplomacy, care and innovation. Carpinelli is known for treating each case individually and considering both the welfare of the student and the institution. The award says Carpinellli exemplifies "the qualities of a true educator, advocating what is right and fair for the student and the institution. It takes a rare person to balance these roles."
Smith has been responsible for fire safety and pest control for 17 years at the department of Envir onmental Health and Safety.
Smith is known for going far beyond the call of duty to assist with health and safety issues on campus. Smith's award says, "You have always been available, including evenings, weekends and even the dead of the night to reset or repair fire alarm systems and investigate any fire. Your efforts to train others to prevent fires has undoubtably saved both property and lives."
Sostarich has worked at Ohio University for more than 25 years as program director, assistant director and director of Baker Center and as assistant dean of students before becoming associate dean of students.
"You have contributed greatly to the growth and development of students throughout your tenure at Ohio University," Sostarich's award says. "Your guidance and support have been critical to helping untold numbers of students learn through their involvement in campus leadership."
Among those honored with Administrative Service Awards will be Vice President for Finance William Kennard and Vice President for Development Jack Ellis, both with 30 years of service.
