ATHENS, Ohio -- Athens native Jeffrey Clark received the Ohio University Political Science Department's 1999 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award at the department's annual banquet recently. The award recognizes graduates with successful academic, legal or public service careers and is selected by the awards committee based on recommendations of the faculty.

Clark has more than 20 years of experience in international development and currently works as a political analyst and writer. His international work has taken him to 50 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America.

His international career began in 1977 at the start of the Carter Administration when he was appointed to the personal staff of former Ohio Gov. John J. Gilligan, administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Later, while serving as senior professional staff member for the House Select Committee on Hunger, he directed the committee's central role in formulating the U.S. response to the 1984-85 Ethiopian and greater sub-Saharan famine crises.

Before accepting his appointment to USAID, Clark worked for the Ohio Democratic Party and served on the senatorial campaign staff of John Glenn.
