ATHENS, Ohio -- Barnard College Political Science Professor Dennis Dalton will deliver the keynote speech, "Gandhi's Power," at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 5, in 194 Irvine Hall on the Athens campus of Ohio University. The speech kicks off the "Commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi and his Philosophy of Satyagraha" conference that runs through April 10.
Dalton is author of "Mahatma Gandhi: Nonviolent Power in Action."
The theme of the conference is "Student Activism and Nonviolent Struggles for Social Justice and Human Rights: An International Perspective." Satyagraha is Gandhi's philosophy based on "the force which is born of truth and love or nonviolence."
Conference events include the following panel discussions:
"What is Social Justice? What are the Philosophical foundations of Human Rights? Are Postmodernism and Social Justice an Oxymoron?" 4 p.m. April 6, Baker Center 203.
"Asian Values vs. Universal Human Rights," 4 p.m. April 7, Baker Center 203.
"Women as Leaders of Nonviolent Struggles: Peoples Power in the Phillippines," 4 p.m. April 8, Friends of the Libraries Room, third floor of Alden Library.
"Local Activism: The Sixties, Student Activism," 4 p.m. April 9, Baker Center 203.
"Martin Luther King: Beyond Legal Equality," 4 p.m. April 10, Baker Center 203.
