ATHENS, Ohio -- An associate professor of nursing in the Ohio University College of Medicine has been awarded a $4,000 grant from Ohio Campus Compact and the School of Nursing to study abuse and violence toward pregnant women in Meigs and Scioto counties.
"Very little has been done to study the problems related to domestic violence in southeastern Ohio," said Sharon Denham, associate professor of nursing. "Abuse and violence are recognized as national health priorities and are areas where effective prevention programs need to be developed and health care providers need greater knowledge and skills. This program will provide a foundation for education and future prevention programs."
Pregnant women, new mothers and fathers, and health care workers will participate in the study, which will be conducted in the spring. Participants will be contacted directly through various agencies in the counties. The results of the study will be used to develop service learning projects related to community health nursing. The projects will involve Ohio University nursing students, who will gain practical knowledge while contributing to the community through volunteer work.
Campus Compact contributed $1,700 toward the grant and the remainder was provided by the School of Nursing.
Campus Compact is a coalition of Ohio colleges and universities that attempts to increase campus participation in community and public service projects. The grants were created to support relationships between universities and communities, strengthen student learning and enhance the professional development of faculty.
