ATHENS, Ohio -- Doug Mann, assistant professor of social medicine and former coordinator of instructional development for the College of Osteopathic Medicine, has been named Ohio University's new associate provost for information technology. The appointment is effective July 1.

Mann will direct the planning and operation of the university's information technology effort, including academic and administrative computing, instructional technology development and research, and networking and Internet systems. He will oversee the Center for Innovation in Technology for Learning, Computer Services, Administrative Systems and Communication Network Services.

He joined Ohio University's College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1983 as coordinator of instructional development, supervising projects on computer-based learning and coordinating multimedia services. He served in this position until the summer of 1998, when he became an assistant professor of social medicine in the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Mann earned an undergraduate degree in telecommunications from Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma, a master's degree in instructional systems technology from Indiana University and a doctorate in experimental psychology from Ohio University in 1997.

In his new role, Mann plans to increase support for the use of technology in teaching and scholarly activity, improve awareness of new technology across campus and encourage Ohio University's participation in state and national information technology projects, such as the Ohio Learning Network.

"This position combines all of my interests in the psychology of human learning and performance with the appropriate use of technology," Mann said. "Technology exists to meet our needs to manage information, whether that is students learning or administrators keeping track of resources or faculty doing research and teaching. Ohio University is in a very good position to move ahead with information technology."

Doug Lawrence, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, has served as interim associate provost for information technology since last July. Provost Sharon Brehm is confident Mann will make a successful transition into his new position.

"Doug Lawrence has done a terrific job as associate provost of information technology, and Doug Mann will ensure that Ohio University continues its progress in this crucial area," she said.

"Doug Mann brings a strong background in telecommunications and instructional technology in addition to his Ph.D. work emphasizing cognitive psychology. This unique combination of skills gives him an ability to work with all the various facets of technology. Dr. Mann also is well-known and highly respected on campus and will be able to develop strong linkages across diverse constituencies."

Mann lives in Athens County with his wife, Mary Pat, and two children, Alex, 12, and Clare, 7.
