ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University News Services and Periodicals has won two national awards in the annual Circle of Excellence Awards contest sponsored by the Council for Advancement in Support of Education (CASE).
CASE is an international education association of 2,900 member institutions serving professionals in communications, alumni relations and philanthropy.
Perspectives, the university's four-color biannual magazine devoted to research, scholarship and creative activity, won a bronze medal from CASE in the Special Constituency Magazine category. Perspectives was the only university research magazine to win an award in the category, which included 48 entries. Kelli Whitlock is editor of Perspectives, which was created in spring of 1997 through the joint efforts of University News Services and Periodicals and the vice president for the Office of Research and Graduate Studies.
Gold, silver and bronze medals usually are awarded by CASE for first, second and third place. However, the judges did not award a gold medal in this year's Special Constituency Magazine division. Stanford won the silver medal. Ohio University, the University of Missouri and Cornell were awarded bronze medals.
News Services and Periodicals' other CASE award came in Periodical Staff Writing, where a five-story package won a silver medal. All five stories appeared in Perspectives. Thirty-five entries were received by CASE.
Ohio University's entry included two stories by Whitlock on Dysart Woods and elliptical galaxies; Bill Estep's story on the new television rating system; Bryan McNulty's feature on the atomic bomb's place in history; and former staffer Emily Caldwell's story on bullies.
Brown University and the University of Notre Dame won gold medals in that category, while the University of Pittsburgh and University of Portland (Oregon) joined Ohio University with silver medals. Bronze medals were awarded to Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Iowa State University and Johns Hopkins University. The awards will be presented at CASE's annual meeting in Chicago in July.
In another competition, McNulty's Perspectives story, titled "The Great Atomic Bomb Debate," received an award of merit for Written Piece in the Bronze Quill competition sponsored by the International Association of Business Communicator's (IABC) Columbus chapter. The article was the cover story of the Spring/Summer 1997 issue of Perspectives.
Also honored in the competition was Media Productions, which received an award of merit for Audiovisual Presentation for the video "Ohio Sports Network Bobcat Open," produced in July of 1997 by Media Productions Director Paul Ladwig in conjunction with Mills James Productions in Columbus. The video is used to promote televised Ohio athletic events. The unit also received the award of excellence for Video Production for "MBA Without Boundaries." Produced by Senior Producer David Urano in June of 1997, the video is used by the College of Business to attract top students. Media Productions provides a range of multimedia services for university faculty and staff. The awards will be presented at an IABC banquet in Columbus tonight.
News Services and Media Productions are units of the University Relations division.
