ATHENS, Ohio -- Kelli Whitlock, who joined Ohio University News Services and Periodicals in July 1996, has been named associate director of the office and research communications editor, effective immediately.

In her new post, Whitlock, 29, will assist Executive Director Bryan McNulty in the day-to-day operations of the office, work with media representatives, and provide editorial assistance to academic units and offices on campus.

Kelli is a talented writer and editor with excellent organizational skills and sound judgment," McNulty said. "I look forward to working closely with her as the University Relations Division focuses its efforts on enhancing Ohio University's national and international visibility and reputation."

Whitlock had been a science writer and managing editor since arriving at Ohio University nearly two years ago from Ohio State University's Office of Science Communications and Periodicals. She will continue to cover science and engineering research, work as editor of the Research News and Science News services for regional and national media, and serve as editor of Perspectives, Ohio University's biannual magazine of research, scholarship and creative activity.

News Services began publishing the magazine last year in cooperation with the Office of the Vice President of Research and Graduate Studies. This spring, Perspectives won a bronze medal in the Special Constituency Magazine category in the national awards contest sponsored by the Council for Advancement in Support of Education (CASE). University News Services and Periodicals also won a silver medal in the CASE contest in the Periodical Staff Writing category, an entry based on five stories that appeared in Perspectives.

Whitlock worked at Ohio State for two years and spent four years as a reporter for The Huntsville (Ala.) Times and The Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News from 1990 to 1994. She won several writing awards as an Alabama reporter, including a state Associated Press first-place award for best series in 1995 for newspapers over 40,000 circulation and the 1995 New York Times Chairman's Award for a series on the elderly.

She is a member of the National Association of Science Writers, University Research Magazine Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Whitlock earned a bachelor of arts in journalism in 1992 from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and currently is pursuing a master's degree in journalism at Ohio University.

University News Services and Periodicals is the central office on campus that distributes information about the university to news media and responds to queries from reporters and editors. It also produces periodicals for the university's internal and external audiences.
