ATHENS, Ohio -- The 19th annual Alumni College continuing education program for alumni and their families is scheduled to begin Thursday, July 10 and continue through Sunday, July 13 on the Ohio University Athens campus.

Alumni College is designed to provide ac ademic and entertainment activities for alumni and their families. The Ohio University Alumni Association developed the program based on the idea that continuing education allows alumni to stay informed about events and developments around the world, according to Richard Harrison, director of Alumni Relations.

"It is one of the best ways alumni may recreate their collegiate experience with family and friends while learning about history and contemporary issues in a fun and exciting setting," Harrison said. "Local alumni and Athens community members are encouraged to attend with their families."

This year's Jr. Alumni College program, titled "The Great Civilization Camp," is designed for children ages 6 to 12. The program, designed and supervised by a certified educator, invites children to explore the world around them using the tools of the archaeological discipline. Participants will be divided into teams with the goal of discovering how ancient cultures lived and how they expressed their beliefs. Children will learn how to set up a base camp (no overnight camping), cook on an open fire and exercise safety on the trail. Along the way teams will unearth a few actual archaeological artifacts.

The early bird program features an opportunity for participants to work with the Athens County Habitat for Humanity. A second option is to experience a guided nature hike through Stroud's Run State Park. Academic program topic highlights include "Musical Excursions Th rough America," "Beginning Internet & Web Page Design," "Watersheds: Critical Moments in History," "Personal Finance 101," "The Art and Science of Fishing," "The CPI (Consumer Price Index)," "Social Security," "Slaves and Masters in Ancient Rome," "American Game Shows in Other Countries," "Myths about Movie Westerns," and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Unexplored Ridges.

The cost of the program is $175 per adult without lodging and $225 with lodging in a university residence hall.
