ATHENS, Ohio -- The Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University has begun a new awards program serving outstanding graduating seniors at Athens County high schools.

The outstanding male and female graduate from each area high school received the book The Art of the Personal Essay by Phillip Lopate from the college during awards ceremonies in late May and early June.

"We decided that we wanted to honor the outstanding graduating seniors from the county's high schools to reward them for their outstanding academic performance and to encourage their writing," said Ann Brown, assistant dean of the college.

The recipients of the book are:

  • Federal Hocking High School: Erin Carroll and Timothy Johnson

  • Athens High School: Upendri Gunasekera and Joseph Hughes

  • Nelsonville York High School: Sydney Brooks, Stephanie Shafer and Terry Mohler

  • Trimble High School: Zachary Miller, Christopher Shafer and Kandi King

  • Alexander High School: Kent Lankas and Lorena Lieving
