BE HELD AT OHIO UNIVERSITY

6/4/97 Contact: Cynthia Tindongan, 614/593-4277

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio University Center for Community Service and Ohio Campus Compact will present a roundtable discussion on service-learning for faculty and administrators from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday (June 6) in the Post Office Annex in Nelson Commons on the Athens campus.

The discussion, the third in a series of three 1997 roundtables, will focus on service-learning in the SEAMS disciplines -- science, engineering, architecture, mathematics and computer science.

The keynote speaker will be Rand Decker, associate professor of civil engineering at the University of Utah, who will address the topic of integrating service-learning into courses. His speech begins at 10:30 a.m.

The event is free and is open to all faculty and administrators from Ohio University and other institutions in the region. About 40 people are expected to participate, said Cynthia Tindongan, coordinator of service-learning programs at Ohio University.

Service-learning is defined as a teaching and learning method that connects meaningful community service experiences with academic learning, personal growth and civic responsibility. Service-learning initiatives at Ohio University are coordinated through the Center for Community Service in partnership with University College.

The Ohio Campus Compact is a coalition of public and private colleges and universities that aims to increase student participation in community and public service, and integrate community service as a valued element of higher education.

The roundtable on SEAMS disciplines will include a continental breakfast, formal presentation, luncheon and discussion or small-group interaction.

Faculty and administrators who haven't registered are welcome to attend. Those interested in participating should call Cynthia Tindongan at 614/593-4277.
