ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University has received national honors for its 1998 Foundation Report by the Ohio University Foundation. The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) awarded the university a silver medal in the Individual Fund-Raising Pieces category. There were 266 entries.
The 56-page Foundation Report details the impact of private support at Ohio University and showcases some of the university's most generous benefactors, using black-and-white and color photographs. The university received more than $18 million in contributions in fiscal year 1998, nearly $5 million more than in 1997. Leonard Raley, executive director of the foundation and vice president for alumni relations and development at Ohio University, says the award honors the many alumni and friends who have made gifts to the foundation.
"This award pays tribute to the remarkable individuals who have created a tradition of philanthropy here at Ohio University," Raley said. "The report captures how far the foundation has come since it was established in 1945."
As the fund-raising arm of the university, the Ohio University Foundation is the repository for all private gifts through annual giving programs, capital and special campaigns and planned or deferred gifts. During fiscal year 1998, more than $18.1 million was raised in total private contributions from more than 28,000 donors. The university endowment, currently $178 million, provided Ohio University with more than $6.5 million in academic, instructional and scholarship support last year.
The Ohio University Foundation, which is governed by a 49-member volunteer board, is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. CASE is an international education association with 2,900 member institutions serving professionals in communications, alumni relations and philanthropy.
