OHIO UNIVERSITY WINS NATIONAL HONORS
FOR DESIGN PROJECT AND RESEARCH WRITING

ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University received national honors for a campus design project, research and science writing, and a series of articles on pain in the annual Circle of Excellence competition sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

University Publications won a gold medal in the Individual In-House Publications category for the design of hang tags used by the Department of Facilities Management. Judges received 156 entries in this category and presented three gold medals, nine silver and three bronze.

The hang tags are used to inform clients of the status of a job performed by Facilities Managemen t staff. The tags are shaped to fit into a back pocket and allow space for client comments. At the bottom of the tag is a tear-off card with contact information, which can be used by clients for quick reference. University Graphic Designer Michelle McElfresh Shirer created 16 designs to correspond to each of the different shops in Facilities Management.

Also recognized was a series of articles on faculty research on pain, "A World of Hurt," published in the Autumn/Winter 1998 issue of Perspectives, the unviersity's biannual magazine of research and creative activity. The series and author, Kelli Whitlock, received a silver medal in the Best Articles of the Year category. Whitlock is director of the Office of Research Communications and editor of Perspectives. Judges at The Chronicle of Higher Education gave awards to 12 articles from a pool of 267 entries in this category.

The university also received a br onze medal in the category for Excellence in News Writing - Research, Medicine and Science Writing. The only other award presented in this category was a silver medal to the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The winning entries were published in Research News and Science News, two quarterly research services produced for the national news media. The five-story package included articles written by Melissa Rake, assistant editor of the alumni publication Ohio University Today and former science writer for University News Services and Periodicals; Dwight Woodward, national media liaison for University News Services and Periodicals; and Whitlock.
