ATHENS, Ohio --Ohio University's Lambda chapter of Phi Beta Kappa initiated 95 new members during its annual Initiation Ceremony June 13 in the Music Recital Hall. In addition, Alan R. Booth, Hamilton/Baker & Hostetler professor of the humanities, was inducted as an honorary member and Joseph H. Berman, dean of the Honors Tutorial College, was inducted as an alumnus member.
Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest of all college honor societies, has elected students who have demonstrated breadth and excellence in the liberal arts & sciences since 1776. To be eligible for induction, seniors must have at least a 3.65 grade point average, and juniors must have at least a 3.80 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Students also must have distribution requirements in three distribution areas- - foreign language, humanities & social science and mathematics & science.
Just over 1% of all seniors, nationwide, are elected each year from the 248 college chapters who are part of what NEWSWEEK calls "the nation's most prestigious academic honors organization."
