ATHENS, Ohio -- Several Athens area students received awards at the 20th Annual Student Awards and Recognition Reception held by Ohio University's College of Health and Human Services on June 4.
In the School of Health Sciences, A.C. Willis was awarded the Carl D. Chambers Outstanding Graduate Award, which is given to an outstanding health administration graduate student by the health science faculty.
Graduate student Jennifer Hoffman, in the School of Hearing and Speech Sciences, was awarded the outstanding graduating master's level scholar or clinician.
The School of Human and Consumer Sciences named two students Outstanding Graduates: Teresa Phillips for Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Bobbi J. Pierce for Interior Design.
The School of Nursing awarded Aimee Vance the Lillian Holgate McCracken Memorial Scholarship, which is given to nursing students who show academic achievement, with priority going to residents of Athens County. Kelli Janine Wilson, also in the School of Nursing, was named Outstanding Graduate.
Jodi Eschmeyer, Jill Mead and Ralph Shearer each received the Outstanding Service Award from the School of Physical Therapy. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to various organizations such as: the Ohio University Student Physical Therapy Organization, the Ohio Physical Therapy Association and the American Physical Therapy Association; assignment and activity on the school's committees; and volunteering and participating in special assignments given by the school's director or faculty. Mead also received the Outstanding Graduate Award.
Award recipients from the School of Recreation and Sports Sciences include:
Shelley Binegar was awarded the Mrs. J.E. Thackrey Memorial Scholarship, which is presented to a sports administration graduate student, selected by classmates, who has shown a commitment to community service to both Athens and Ohio University.
Carie Strasser received the Los Angeles/Vero Beach Dodgers Award, which is presented to a full-time graduate student who is majoring in sports administration and has a commitment to a career in baseball.
Krin Goodwin received the Carl T. Nessley Award and was named Outstanding Graduate in Sport Science: Sport Industry. The Nessley award is presented to senior majors in the school who are considered the most outstanding in terms of academic achievement, personal characteristics and service to the university and community.
Robert Thorne was awarded the James G. Burkhouse Memorial Scholarship presented to a junior athletic training student who has demonstrated excellence in academic and clinical experience.
Jason Glast was awarded the Monty Woods Memorial Scholarship, which is given to a full-time graduate student in sports administration who has demonstrated an interest in and a professional aspiration for a career in intercollegiate sports information.
Jerry Wallace was awarded the Chicago White Sox Scholarship presented to a minority student from the Chicago area who has demonstrated a career interest in professional baseball.
Julie Barton and Rick Huston each received the Outstanding Graduate Students in Athletic Training Award. The recipients of this award were selected by peers based upon the positive manner in which they represent the profession of athletic training and Ohio University as well as in recognition of academic achievement.
Shawna Shockey received the Area Six Health Services Scholarship which is a college-wide award given to junior, senior or graduate students majoring in health professions who are graduates of high schools with the 18 Ohio counties formerly served by the Area Six Health Systems Agency.
