ATHENS, Ohio -- Police Officer Wes Clark has been named Officer of the Year and Joni McCune of Parking Services has been named Employee of the Year for the OhioUniversity Police Department.

Assistant Director of Campus Safety Mark Mathews says Clark's thorough investigation of a sexual assault resulted in the indictment of a suspect who is currently awaiting trial. Clark has been praised as one of the best criminal investigators in the department and has been commended by victims of crime for his commitment to justice and his sensitivity. He heads the department's charity involvement with the Special Olympics and the Ohio Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Clark has served the department since 1993.

McCune has shown commitment to continued improvement of the Parking Services Division by being kind and helpful and completing job tasks with professionalism, Mathews said. Her creative ability to look for new, more effective ways of doing things has made her an asset to the department in the two years she has worked there.

Both awards were presented at the fourth annual Employee Recognition Banquet for the Ohio University Police Department. Other awards and recipients were:

  • Citizen Recognition Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the OUPD, university and community: Lucy Conn, Alden Library; William Brislon (student employee), Alden Library; Enrique Hermosilla, University Housing; Robert Hynes, director, Residence and Auxiliary Services; Judge Michael Ward, Athens County Common Pleas Court; Candy Goodwin, Printing Resources, Duplication Center; Maxine Rantone, owner of Cycle Path Bicycle Shop; John Tysko, system administrator, Computer Science; Jeanine Woodruff, assistant director, Health Education and Wellness.

  • Physical Fitness Award, given for completing or exceeding standards of the department's fitness program: Officer Steve Pratt, Officer Mike Trout, Lt. Steve Noftz.

  • Attendance Award, which goes to employees who have worked at least 12 months without using sick leave: Officer Dave Coleman, 88 months; Officer Dave Gillogly, 52 months; Officer Bill Zoller, 52 months; senior secretary Sharon Snodgrass, 44 months; Officer Eric Hoskinson, 12 months.

  • Employee Merit Award, which recognizes a strong commitment to the university and community: Communications Officers Laura Johnson and Cathy Hart.

  • Officer Merit Award, given for demonstrating strong commitment to the university and community: Officers Mike Trout, Melissa Gelbart and Eric Hoskinson.
