ATHENS, Ohio -- Twenty-five Ohio high school seniors and juniors are winners in the final round of Ohio University's 51st annual American History Contest held on the Athens campus in December.

Christopher Radcliff, a student at Central Hower High School in Akron, won first place in the statewide competition, winning a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to Ohio University and a $100 cash award.

More than 17,500 students at 390 Ohio high schools took the preliminary multiple-choice examination at their local schools in October.

The two-hour, final-round essay examination included questions dealing with self-government in the colonies on the eve of the American Revolution; the motivations and impact of territorial expansion of the United States between 1800 and 1860; key movements of the 1960s; and how Americans responded to the events of World War I and the need to create a new world order. Students were to answer three of the four questions.

Second place winner, Farah Abdulla, of Beavercreek High School, Beavercreek, received a one-year, $1,500 Ohio University scholarship and a $75 cash prize. Third- and fourth-place winners received $1,500 one-year scholarships and $65 and $60. The fifth-place winner received a $1,500 scholarship and $55.

Sixth- through twelfth-place winners received $1,250 scholarships and cash awards ranging from $50 to $25. Those placing 13th through 25th received Certificates of Superior Achievement Awards.

The $150 Outstanding High School awards, based on a school's number of preliminary and final round winners, were given to six high schools. The first place winners were Westerville North High School and Beavercreek High School, large school division; Hoover High School, North Canton, medium school division; and Summit Country Day, small school division.

The second place winners were Perrysburg in the medium-school division and Miami Valley School in the small-school division.

Ohio University's Annual American History contest is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the admissions office and the History Department. Contest coordinator is History Professor Marvin Fletcher.
