1997 OUTSTANDING CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE AWARDS

ATHENS, Ohio -- Five Athens campus civil service employees and a sixth from the Chillicothe regional campus have been named winners of the 1997 Outstanding Classified Employee Awards at Ohio University.

The award recipients are Karyn Davis, account clerk specialist in the Ohio University Foundation Office; Randy Gastin, building maintenance superintendent in the Facilities Management Key Shop; Nancy Harris, senior secretary in the Dean's Office in Chillicothe; Kathy Hoisington, secretary in the Purchasing Department; Stephen Noftz, police lieutenant and day shift supervisor, Department of Campus Safety; and Ida Wachenschwanz, custodial work supervisor, Residential Custodial and Interior Services.

President Robert Glidden will present each recipient with a $500 check and a framed certificate at an awards ceremony from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 22) in the 1804 Room of Baker Center.

The University Human Resources Office sponsors the awards, which have recognized distinguished service among classified civil service employees for 12 years. Eligible employees are nominated by any faculty, staff member or student, and must be full- or part-time permanent civil service or bargaining unit employees with a minimum of five consecutive years of service.

Co-workers praised Davis for having a positive and lasting impact" on the university through her recently completed year as chair of the Classified Staff Advisory Council. An Ohio University employee for 10 years, she also was described as a dedicated, hard-working employee" who approaches her job with utmost professionalism."

Gastin, who has worked at Ohio University for 19 years, has earned a reputation of being a positive" supervisor who has the ability to interpret complicated key mastering systems and projects.

An Ohio University employee for 19 years, Harris was recognized for computer expertise and knowledge of university policies and procedures. She recently researched new insurance plans being offered by the university and assisted others with their insurance choices.

Hoisington was cited for her friendly, enthusiastic approach to her job as supervisor of the Purchasing Department's student worker staff and for being a secretary of the highest degree." An active member of the Classified Staff Advisory Council, she has worked at the university for 10 years.

Noftz' contributions to the Department of Campus Safety have been many, including development of a plan to assist in eliminating bicycle thefts, implementation of new firearms training programs for police officers, and participation in education programs. He has 11 years of service at Ohio University.

Wachenschwanz, a 29-year member of the Ohio University staff, was praised for her positive outlook and the timely way in which she performs her housekeeping duties on South Green.
