ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio University Division of United Appeal has surpassed its $68,000 goal for this year's campaign with a total of $70,613 raised.

Seven hundred and ninety three Ohio University employees contributed an average of $89. Last year, 814 contributors raised $67,785 in the Ohio University campaign for an average contribution of $83.37. This year's figures are compiled through Thursday (Jan. 9).

We are pleased that Ohio University employees have shown their community spirit by sharing with those in need through the United Appeal campaign, and we're especially pleased that we have surpassed our goal for this year," said Ohio University President Robert Glidden. We are grateful to all those who contribute, and I personally want to thank (Campaign Chair) Dick Polen and all the volunteers who worked to make this a successful campaign."

The Ohio University fund drive will accept donations through Jan. 31, and the payroll deduction option for payment still can be utilized. Employees who need pledge cards are asked to call 593-2097.

Ohio University traditionally has accounted for at least one-third of the total amount raised by United Appeal for Athens County, which funds 15 area social service agencies.

The Athens County campaign has raised $150,000 and expects to meet its $165,000 goal before the campaign concludes in late February, said Executive Director Skip Logan.
