ATHENS, Ohio -- Five Athens campus classified civil service employees and a sixth from the Chillicothe regional campus have been named winners of the 1996 Outstanding Employee Awards at Ohio University.
The award recipients are Roger Crow, custodian in the Food Service area; Connie Garrett, Employee Benefits Specialist in University Human Resources; Jimmie Glass, supervisor in the Plumbing Shop; Cathy Hart, dispatcher in the Campus Safety Department; Kimberley A. McKimmy, clerical specialist in the Job Prep Program on the Chillicothe campus; and Stephen E. Orth, Records Management Officer in the Dean's Office, College of Communication.
President Robert Glidden will present each recipient with a $500 check and a framed certificate at an awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 15) in the 1804 Room of Baker Center.
The Classified Staff Advisory Council sponsors the awards, which have recognized distinguished service among campus employees for 11 years. Eligible employees are nominated by any faculty, staff member or student, and must be full- or part-time permanent civil service or bargaining unit employees with a minimum of five consecutive years of service.
The selection committee included classified staff, administrators and faculty from the Athens and regional campuses.
ABOUT THE RECIPIENTS
Crow, an Ohio University employee for more than 10 years, is considered by co-workers a dependable and respected custodian in the Food Service area. He is described as a team worker known for taking pride in the sanitation and safety of the Shively Hall Food Service area.
Through her work in University Human Resources during the past 11 years, Garrett has helped hundreds of employees understand and wisely use their health insurance and educational benefits plans, and the Employee Assistance Program. Garrett is credited with building the Employee Assistance Program, a referral service for employees and their family members seeking professional help for personal problems, into a "rising star benefit."
Glass is described by his co-workers as an "expert, master craftsman," and has earned the respect of superiors and subordinates because of the high standards he sets for himself and his employees. His excellent work with the Plumbing Shop has consistently earned him the highest ratings that can be earned by an Ohio University employee. He has been with Ohio University for over ten years. During her nine years with the Campus Safety Department, Hart has been active not only with the duties of her dispatching job, but with community service events as well. She coordinated the Sgt. Charles A. Butcher Bicycles for Youth Program, which has presented more than 100 re-conditioned bicycles to needy youths. Hart has been named the department's Employee of the Year for two consecutive years. McKimmy works in the Chillicothe campus' Focus enter, which administers the ob Prep Program, a program designed to ease Ohio welfare recipients' transition into education and job opportunities. McKimmy is described as friendly, dependable, efficient and innovative. Her ideas have included a "Breakfast with Santa" program, which has contributed to the success of the Job Prep Program. She has worked at the Chillicothe campus for seven years. An Ohio University employee for 16 years, Orth has a reputation for a conscientious, caring and professional approach to his work. In addition to his notable job performance, he has contributed hundreds of hours per year volunteering for WOUB Radio and TV and Public Access TV. He also graduated with high honors from the School of Telecommunications in 1993.
