ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University Emeritus Professor of Physics and Astronomy Folden B. Stumpf and Associate Professor of Environmental and Plant Biology Brian C. McCarthy have been named fellows of The Ohio Academy of Science. They are among 48 scientists, engineers and educators recently recognized by the academy for their extensive scientific, technological and educational contributions to society.

"Fellows provide a deep and rich pool of talent from which to draw ideas for strong programs, to help improve science education, and to advise state and local governments on science and engineering-based policy issues," said Lynn E. Elfner, CEO of The Ohio Science Academy.

Stumpf joined the Department of Physics in 1956 after earning his doctorate in physics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Recently his research has centered on ultrasonic studies in binary l iquid mixtures and impedance of and radiation from underwater sound transducers. His work has been published in numerous professional journals and he is the author of "Analytical Acoustics".

McCarthy is investigating the composition dynamics and regeneration of hardwood forests. His two main research projects involve the effects of disturbances and invasive plant spices on forest composition and structure. He is also working on a long-term research project on Dysart Woods, a 50-acre old-growth forest owned by the university. He joined the faculty in 1992 after earning his doctorate in plant ecology from Rutgers University in 1989.
