ATHENS, Ohio -- About 1,100 siblings will travel via chartered, chaperoned buses to Ohio University's Athens campus this week for the annual Siblings' Weekend festivities.
Buses from Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Pittsburgh, Toledo and Youngstown will arrive at the Convocation Center from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 13). Siblings from Chicago will fly to the Columbus airport, where they will meet a bus that will take them to Athens later Friday night. The buses will depart from the Convocation Center on Sunday afternoon.
The bus trips are sponsored by university alumni chapters in each city and are chaperoned by chapter members. All profits from the bus trips go to Ohio University scholarships for students in each city.
A Sibs' Weekend Variety Show, sponsored by the Black Students Cultural Programming Board (BSCPB), will kick off the activities at 7 p.m. Friday in Baker Center Ballroom. Admission is $3. It will be followed by an After Party, also sponsored by BSCPB, at 10 p.m. Admission is $5.
The Pingapalooza returns this year with carnival games, caricature artists, wall climbing and relays from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday at the Ping Student Recreation Center. Admission is $5 for sibs and the event is free for Ohio University students.
On Saturday, a Sibs' Social will take place 10 a.m. to noon in the Baker Center Corner Room. The event, sponsored by Ohio University YMCA, features face painting, T-shirt designing and games. Admission is $1.
Other events on Saturday include a Sibs' Carnival, a free event of casino games, karaoke and food sponsored by Resident Action Council, beginning at 7 p.m. in Jefferson Hall Library; a comedy show at 8 p.m. in Grover Center, sponsored by BSCPB and costing $8; and Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society's Sibs' Skate Night from 10:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Bird Arena, with admission $2 and skate rental $2 for all.
Siblings also may attend Ohio University hockey games at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday night against Penn State and Michigan State, respectively; the men's basketball game against Marshall University at 4:30 p.m. Saturday; and the School of Theater's performance of "Hedda Gabler" at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
