TWO NATIONALLY KNOWN WRITERS

ATHENS, Ohio -- Two nationally known poets and writers will appear on Ohio University's Athens campus nine days apart over the next two weeks.

John Haines, an author of more than 30 books of poetry, essays and translations, will deliver a lecture titled Beyond the Frontier" at 3:30 p.m. and then give a reading of his work at 8 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 10) in the Friends of the Library Room, 319 Alden Library.

Sydney Lea, a noted poet, essayist and critic, will give a reading of his nonfiction at 8 p.m. Feb. 19 in Galbreath Chapel on the campus.

All events are sponsored by the Program in Creative Writing of the Department of English, and are free and open to the public.

Haines, once called a a writer of rare vision and poetic eloquence," is former winner of fellowships and awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Among his books are The Owl in the Mask of the Dreamer: Collected Poems; Fables and Distances: New and Selected Essays; and The Stars, the Snow, the Fire.

Lea has written Hunting the Whole Way Home, a collection of naturalist essays, as well as six collections of poetry, a novel and a book on criticism. His poetry is published regularly in The New Yorker, The New Republic and The Atlantic. His honors include the 1997 Poets' Prize, a Fulbright Lectureship, and fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller foundations.

Founder and former editor of the literary journal New English Review, Lea currently is a visiting professor at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. His books will be available to purchase at a reception following the reading.
